World of Hyatt is one of the most popular hotel loyalty programs out there. It’s no where close to Marriott, or IHG, when it comes to number of properties, or exciting promotions.
However, the level of service and recognition for loyal members at Hyatt is unmatched in the industry.
Unfortunately, their expiry policy for world of Hyatt points is not very customer friendly.
Hyatt points expire after 24 months of inactivity. This means that if you don’t have any activity in your World of Hyatt account for consecutive 24 months, all your points will expire for good.
Note that prior to July 2017, even the membership account was terminated. That’s not the case anymore.
Once the points are expired, they cannot be reinstated. And Hyatt is pretty strict about it.
Here’s the official policy of Hyatt regarding points expiry.
If a Member’s account is inactive for twenty-four (24) consecutive months, all points in that member’s account will be forfeited at that time, but, subject to the program terms, the member’s account will remain open (with the ability to earn new points thereafter).
World of Hyatt points are worth a lot, and are not as easy to earn as other programs like Marriott Bonvoy.
Therefore, it makes sense to keep an eye on the activity in your account and
What’s the easiest way to extend your World of Hyatt points validity?
There are several ways to extend the validity of World of Hyatt points.
However, if you have enough points to save, the simplest way is to just purchase a few World of Hyatt points. For US$48 (minimum purchase), you can extend the life of your Hyatt points by another 24 months.
If purchasing points is not a suitable option for you, here are the other ways to extend the life of your World of Hyatt points.
Earn points
Earning points by staying or for other spends at a participating Hyatt or MGM Rewards property is the primary qualifying activity. Make sure you book direct, and verify that your membership number is correctly mentioned on the booking.
Receiving credit with a travel partner or MGM Rewards Tier Credits for a stay at a Hyatt hotel or resort will also be a qualifying activity.
Tip: Keep a buffer for points to credit, missing points, back and forth with the hotel or customer care etc.
Redeem points
Redeeming your World of Hyatt points for award night stays, room upgrades, dining, spa, car rentals, etc. are all considered qualifying activity to extend the validity of Hyatt points in your account.
Please note that, if a member redeems points for an award reservation and either cancels that reservation or does not actually check-in on the appointed date (i.e., no-shows), that will not count as a redemption of points and will not affect the measurement of that member’s World of Hyatt activity.
Gift or combine points with other members
Gifting or combining points is also an easy way to keep your Hyatt account active. However, it’s not an easy process. Unlike Marriott that allows you to transfer Marriott Bonvoy points online, Hyatt still requires you to call, fill forms etc.
Get a Hyatt Credit Card
This is pretty straightforward. If you have a World of Hyatt Credit Card, it will automatically keep your account active as long as it remains open.
Conclusion
World of Hyatt points expire after 24 months of inactivity. But there are several ways to extend their validity. By earning or redeeming points, purchasing points, transferring them to another member’s account, or using a credit card, you can keep your World of Hyatt account active and your points safe from expiry.
